Asian Turkey Burgers Recipe and Terra’s Kitchen Review

Asian Turkey Burgers Recipe with Quick Pickles - an easy super flavorful turkey burger made with scallions, soy sauce, garlic, and peanut butter or almond. Top them with cucumbers tossed salt and vinegar to make pickles in minutes! Recipe and review of Terra's Kitchen meal delivery service

The one caveat of healthy living, other than trying to dodge doughnuts all the time (it can’t just be me), is that it isn’t always convenient. Even though most of us begin every day with the best intentions, our willpower can be eroded throughout the day. On longer, more stressful days when dinnertime rolls around, suddenly ordering  a n y t h i n g  seems like a much better idea than stopping at the grocery store for ingredients, prepping, and cooking — even if we know it would be better for us. Really, though, sometimes we’ll order even if we have ingredients just because we can’t bear to chop and prep them. It’s the takeout trap, and I nearly fall into it all the time.

One way to avoid the trap is to get healthy meals delivered. Better yet, get the ingredients delivered, and make sure they’re prepped and ready to go. Recently, that’s exactly what I did. I tried Terra’s Kitchen, a farm-to-front door meal-kit delivery service. They send fresh, pre-portioned and prepped seasonal ingredients for meals that can be made in 30 minutes or less. I made 2 meals: Asian turkey burgers with quick pickles and Mediterranean tacos. Read on for my review (and recipe!)

TerrasKitchen.com displays all the information you need and is easy to use. I was able to sign up, browse food options and price, and schedule a delivery day within a few minutes.

Menu Options

You have the option of hand-picking your meals from a range of vegetarian, gluten-free, and paleo choices, or you can just opt for the featured meals that week. Overall, the menu options mostly consist of simpler meals, which I prefer for my weeknight meals, but there are a few fancier dishes if you’re feeling ambitious, having a date night, or entertaining. We ordered  2 meals: Asian Turkey Burgers with Quick Pickles and Mediterranean Tacos (made with lamb, mint, and feta).

Shipping

This is one of the big selling points of Terra’s Kitchen: shipping was free, on time, and easy. You select a delivery day and they ship all the ingredients in a “vessel” which is sort of like a mini refrigerator. The crazy organizer in me who’s turning into my mother more and more every day loved opening the lock on the side of the vessel and seeing that all of the ingredients were neatly packed inside slide-out drawers. Tidiness and efficiency are my love languages.

But here’s a truly great feature of Terra’s Kitchen: after emptying the vessel you just peel off the top label, revealing a return shipping label, and put it back outside your home/mailbox to be picked up and shipped back to Terra’s Kitchen the very next day. This shipping method really addresses the issue of waste with these services. By re-using the shipping container 100 times, Terra’s Kitchen is able to eliminate a huge amount of waste. One note, though: the vessel is moderately heavy, so I would say that if you’re older, or have a living situation with many stairs and no elevator, it might be difficult to transport the vessel in and out of your home.

Ingredients

I was so impressed with the quality of Terra’s Kitchen ingredients. And I’ll admit that before they arrived, I tempered my expectations. How fresh could green leaf lettuce/mint/cucumber/scallions possibly stay? Turns out, very fresh. The veggies and herbs were crisp and perfectly ripe–on par with what I usually find at my Whole Foods or the farmer’s market. I was so pleasantly surprised. Every ingredient came pre-portioned, pre-measured, and sealed in its own container. The garlic was already minced, the scallions were chopped, and the feta was crumbled, making food prep a breeze. The meat came packaged in cryovac plastic to keep it fresh.

Instructions

Each meal we ordered came with a large recipe card with a color photo of the finished product. The back of the card had a step-by-step cooking guide complete with pictures, basic nutrition information (full nutrition info available online), suggested wine and beer pairings, and a pro tip, like “To make working with the [raw] turkey burgers easier, give your hands a spritz of non-stick vegetable oil spray first.”

Meal Quality

The two recipes Daniel and I tried were the Asian Spiced Turkey Burgers with Quick Pickles and the Mediterranean Tacos. Both were straightforward to prepare, came out looking like the picture, and tasted fresh, summery, and full of flavor. I preferred the Asian Turkey Burgers because I’m a sucker for Asian flavor and anything with pickles, but Daniel liked the Mediterranean Tacos because we don’t have lamb all that often.

Price

You can choose a meal plan of 3 dinners for 2 people, 4 dinners for 2 people, or 2 dinners for 4 people. Each meal costs between $9.99 and $17.99 per serving, which is obviously more than shopping and doing all of your own prep, but the food is such high quality and the convenience is tough to beat. And compared to other services like this, I do love their shipping.

Overall, I think Terra’s Kitchen is a fantastic option if you don’t have the time to shop, prep, and cook or you’re looking for a healthier alternative to take out. Have you ever tried a meal delivery service? Did you enjoy the process?

Ingredients

Quick Pickles:

  • 1/3 medium cucumber thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar or red wine vinegar
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds

Asian Turkey Burgers:

  • 8 ounces ground turkey breast
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • 1/3 cup chopped scallions
  • 2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons creamy natural peanut butter
  • 6 leaves green leaf lettuce
  • 1 lime

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • In a small bowl, toss the cucumber with the vinegar and salt. Set aside.
  • In a medium skillet, heat the sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the scallion and garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Transfer to a large mixing bowl.
  • To the bowl with the scallions and garlic, add the soy sauce and peanut butter and mix well. Add the ground turkey and use your hands to mix until just incorporated. Form into 2 even patties.

I really like the sound of this service and am excited that it’s in my state. Thanks for the code! I have tried Plated and Blue Apron. Plated is better for my husband and I, as it can get a little pricey and it’s easier to order meals for 2 rather than the whole family. The meal offerings have not been boring, but sometimes push my tomato aversion limits. My husband bought me their cookbook, and I have to admit, it’s pretty good.
Blue Apron was better for our whole family, but they were not consistent with the ingredients. Quite often, we were shorted a main ingredient or a different ingredient would arrive, like regular green beans instead of long green beans. They also usually sent beefsteak tomatoes instead of multiple varieties that were supposed to arrive. At the time, there was no way to complain apart from commenting on social media, which only showed you others had the same problem. I don’t know if that has changed, but we were a bit turned off with the service.

I placed an order based on your recommendation and the fact the awesome $30.00 off trial and they did not deduct $30.00 from my order total with the code you provided. I’ve contacted customer service and just want a refund and my order cancelled. Disappointed!!!

I think the peanut butter would add interesting flavor. I love how this was plated and how the scallions look in the burgers.

I’m making this recipe tonight and was wondering if there is a measurement for the olive oil for sauteing the burgers before they go in the oven? I just guessed it might be a tablespoon.
