The number one thing I’ve missed while being pregnant for the past nine months is a Mayflower sandwich. If you live in or around Boston, you know it well because it’s a classic around here. It’s a combination of deli turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce—the kind of sandwich you probably make the day after Thanksgiving, only here in Massachusetts we’ve made it a year-round kinda thing. I’ve craved that turkey and cranberry sauce sammy nonstop for nine solid months, so it’s only fitting that it’s the very first thing I plan to eat once our son arrives—and the sandwich I plan on eating all through the fall (until the craving dies down a little).
Here is my spin on one of Boston’s best sandwiches, the Mayflower: a turkey melt on seedy multigrain bread with whole berry cranberry sauce, sprouts, and plenty of Land O Lakes® Deli American—one of the items that’s always in my fridge. In fact, Land O Lakes® Deli American is likely as permanent a fixture in Massachusetts as the good ol’ Mayflower sandwich itself.
It’s super duper creamy, incredibly versatile, has just the right amount of salty flavor, and it melts beautifully. My mom has been getting it freshly sliced at the deli counter for as long as I can remember and using it in cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches, cheeseburgers, grilled cheese…you name it. There’s a reason it’s the #1 Deli American.
Consider this Mayflower-inspired turkey and cranberry melt my new favorite sandwich. I hope you make it and love it as much as I do!
Turkey Melts with Cranberry Sauce and Sprouts
Ingredients
- 4 slices of your favorite seeded multigrain bread
- 1 ½ tablespoons salted butter softened
- 4 ¾-ounce slices Land O Lakes® Deli American
- 4 ounces thinly sliced turkey deli meat
- ½ cup whole berry cranberry sauce homemade or store-bought
- ⅔ cup sprouts
Instructions
- Spread the softened butter evenly on one side of each of the 4 slices of bread. Place the bread slices on a clean surface, buttered-side-down. Layer 2 of the slices of bread with Land O Lakes® Deli American, then turkey, then sprouts. Spread cranberry sauce over the remaining 2 slices of bread and use them to top the turkey- and Deli American-layered halves.
- Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the sandwiches (lay them in the skillet with the Deli American side down) and cook until it has melted and the bread is golden brown and crisp. Carefully flip the sandwiches over and cook the other side until the bread is browned and crisp. Transfer the sandwiches to plates, slice in half, and serve hot.
Can’t wait to try this and so excited for the two of you as you welcome Mr, Adorable any time now.
