Hi friends! I hope everyone had a great Independence Day. Daniel and I spent the day doing some work around house and had a two person fourth of July cookout on our deck. It was very low key but as pleasant a holiday as I can remember. Do you have any fun traditions or do you just kind of play it by ear like us? Let me know below!

Here is an interesting article about how the standard advice given to kids isn’t always the best—like telling them to focus on the future and stay busy when they would probably be better off learning how to live in the moment and learning how to deal with boredom.
A newly discovered photo has raised the question if Amelia Earhart survived her crash landing. It appears to show a caucasian man and woman on the Japanese controlled Jaluit Atoll who could be Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan.
Daniel sent me this interview with one of his favorite soccer players, Jozy Altidore, who talks about his diet. His favorite cheat meal is Iskender which is a dish he discovered while playing in Turkey. He describes it as “It’s beef on top of buttered bread. It’s delicious, and the bread is baked all together and then you roll the beef on top and you eat it with special sauce or cream.” Sounds pretty good actually.
Most people self-report that they like their steaks medium-rare but according to the data it seems more people order it medium. I am a medium girl myself but I have always been of the opinion people should order their steak however they prefer and shouldn’t be mocked.
I watched the movie 20th Century Women this week and it instantly became one of my favorite movies. It was a beautiful story about a mother raising a son in 1979 Santa Barbara who enlists the help of two other women. It wasn’t heavy on plot but the characters and relationships were so moving and captivating. The whole cast is outstanding but Annette Bening is particularly incredible.

Since you asked about 4th of July celebrations…
My husband and I live in Williamsburg, VA (colonial capital of VA – Woot! Woot!) and the 4th of July is very big here! We’re very fortunate in that our property actually backs onto Colonial Williamsburg property and because of where they shoot off the fireworks and the topography of the land, etc., well, we have a front row seat to the show every year. So every year we watch it with a neighbor or two, maybe a couple or friends or family members, sometimes even strangers who’ve happened to walk down the street and realize they can see the whole thing there. Despite being right next to Colonial Williamsburg, since our neighborhood is a historic one all the little homes can’t be torn down to build big expensive ones like in many other places. There are some fancy places, but there are far more ordinary, modest homes from the 1950s and little 500 sq ft bungalows. But when we’re sitting there watching the fireworks from our neighbor’s porch, and we’ve got the best view in town, it feels like we live in the fanciest part too. And the rest of the year none of us would trade living in any other part of town anyway.
So ya, sorry for long explanation but that’s our 4th of July tradition. :)
